As a part time Kauai resident, I find myself longing to learn more of the true Hawaiian culture, not just the images and experiences encountered by occasional visitors. This Hawaiiana festival was just the ticket to open my eyes to much of what is going on with Hawaiian culture.

I so enjoyed the October 31 day-long session: "Is the Hawaiian Culture Alive and Well." Spending a day listening to so many Hawaiians discuss various aspects of their history and culture was the highlight of the festival for me. It had - is having - an impact on me that I don't fully understand but am grateful for. My wife and I also enjoyed several of the Malama Ola talks given the next day.

Yes, Hawaiians have to be able to "walk the line" in serving the visitor industry while maintaining a sense of identify and strengthening Hawaiian values. I am grateful for events like this which help us all to understand more of the native culture, to see that side of the line. And I am grateful to the Hyatt and to all the volunteers who work hard to make this a success.

I am looking forward to more such events. They are so worth it. Mahalo nui loa!
